How Often Should Electrical Equipment Be Tested and Tagged in NZ?

Start with the environment

Equipment that is frequently moved, flexed or exposed to dust, moisture or physical damage may need more attention than equipment sitting undisturbed in a low-risk office. The testing program should reflect those differences rather than treating every item identically.

Construction and trade sites

Construction and trade environments can have additional site rules and standards because leads, portable tools and temporary electrical equipment are exposed to tougher conditions. Always confirm the current site requirements rather than relying on an interval copied from another workplace.

Office and low-movement equipment

Office equipment is often subject to less physical wear than portable trade tools, but damage still happens. Multi-boards, laptop chargers, kitchen appliances, extension leads and frequently moved equipment deserve practical visual attention between formal checks.

When the schedule should be reviewed

Review the testing approach when a workplace moves, equipment usage changes, new machinery is introduced, incidents occur or previous results show recurring failures. A schedule should support risk management, not become a calendar exercise that nobody questions.

How records help

Clear asset records make it easier to see what was tested, what failed and what is due for future attention. They also reduce the chance that equipment is repeatedly missed because it moves between rooms, vehicles or teams.
