What an RCD does

RCDs are an important protective measure but they do not make unsafe equipment harmless. They work alongside correct installation, maintenance, inspection and safe work practices.

Different RCDs need different approaches

Portable RCDs, fixed switchboard RCDs and equipment incorporating protective devices are not necessarily tested in the same way. The device type and workplace context should be identified before the service is scoped.

Why the test button is useful but limited

A built-in test button is a useful functional check where provided, but it is not a substitute for all instrument testing or inspection requirements. Follow the device instructions and applicable workplace requirements.

Construction and trade environments

RCD protection is especially important in environments where portable electrical equipment is exposed to tougher conditions. Site rules and applicable standards may impose specific expectations, so confirm current requirements for the actual workplace.
